Get to Know Alex, Our Aussie Adventurer
What’s the story behind your name?
My name is Alexandra Brown, I go by Alex––I know, it’s not very Filipino, usually people are shocked when they meet me I’m not a bald white man (it’s usually bald white men who think this). The historical root of my name comes from Alexander the Great, and it means Defender of Men. You’re welcome, men.
Where are your roots?
Where are my roots? This to me refers to the culture and the people that came before me but also where I’ve grown my own roots, that have shaped who I am. My roots on my dad’s side lie in the North West of England, and my roots on my mum’s side lie in Ilocos in the Philippines. I was born in England and lived there until I was 10, but my roots that I’ve planted alongside my community of friends would be where I grew up in Marlborough, New Zealand – a picturesque part of the country, that has taught me many lessons in gratitude. I have roots in quite a few places, many I haven’t explored or I may not even know, but the feeling of belonging is a special one, so I’m making the effort to discover them.
If someone was visiting your hometown, what are the top things to see, eat, and do?
I was an infamous tinder tour provider in Auckland, but as this question refers to my hometown I’ll do it on Blenheim in Marlborough.
• Eat and drink: At the many many wineries – the best sauvignon blanc in the entire world is made here and the vineyards against the backdrop of the mountains are breathtaking – My top picks would be Highfield, Brancott Estate and Wither Hills.
• See: Other than my mum’s garden (visual updates of which are given on her facebook profile 5 times a day), I would make an effort to see the Marlborough Sounds which is a network of islands and sea-drowned valleys that you can kayak through/sail through/take the ferry to the north island through
• Do: Camp in Whites Bay, swim in Pelorus river, drive past the ghost town in Canvastown, walk the Wither Hills (yes, like the wine), go to Rarangi and see mum’s garden
Where on 🌍 have you been and what place was your fave?
I’ve been blessed enough to travel a lot of places in the world. My mum can never be in the same place for more than a few months, and she’s built that restlessness in me too. I’ve done Europe a few times my favourites being Greece, Spain and South of France. I’ve been to a couple of places in Asia, my favourite being of course the Philippines (Coron, Coron, Coron)!! I’ve hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream and my cardigan, and made memories I’ll never forget (most likely at In ‘N’ Out). I did a brief stint in Brazil and Peru – both of which stole my heart; I will never forget dancing in the streets of Lapa, and the sunrise at Machu Picchu. I’ve cruised through a couple Pacific islands, but my favourite hidden secret is Niue an island with no beaches, but an abundance of magical caves filled with turquoise water and whales that you can see from the resort. As for my favourites.. Santorini, Greece took my breath away, sunset at the top of Mt. Tapyas in Coron, and being at Waitangi at sunrise on Waitangi day in New Zealand will be a spiritual experience I’ll hold with me forever.
